Maasai, un grup etnic nilotic care trăiește în special în nordul Tanzaniei și în Kenya, numără aproximativ un milion de persoane. Cunoscuți pentru tradițiile și vestimentația lor distincte, aceștia se numără printre cele mai recunoscute triburi din Africa de Est la nivel internațional. Societatea Maasai este în mod fundamental pastoralistă, creșterea vitelor fiind un element central al economiei și identității lor culturale. Ei trăiesc în mod tradițional în comunități seminomade, locuind în "manyattas" sau sate cu colibe circulare făcute din crengi, noroi și balegă de vacă.
Societatea lor este structurată ierarhic, fiind condusă de un grup de bărbați mai în vârstă care iau decizii vitale. Între timp, războinicii Maasai, sau "moran", dețin roluri culturale importante, inclusiv protecția tribului și creșterea vitelor. În timp ce joacă roluri domestice cruciale, femeile Maasai sunt meșteșugari respectați, cunoscuți pentru lucrările lor complicate cu mărgele.
Maasai urmează un sistem de credință monoteist, venerând o divinitate numită "Enkai". Religia lor încorporează ritualuri și ceremonii pentru a marca etapele vieții. În ciuda faptului că se confruntă cu numeroase provocări moderne, cum ar fi schimbările climatice și disputele legate de terenuri, Maasai își mențin cu înverșunare obiceiurile tradiționale și moștenirea culturală.
